UNC CHARLOTTE

UNC CHARLOTTE

At UNC Charlotte, I advised the Student Niner Media teams across multiple platforms, including the student newspaper, website, radio station, and literary arts magazine. It was an exciting time, as everything was rapidly shifting to digital. Video content was on the rise, newspapers were in decline, and the university itself was evolving—from launching its football program to hosting high-profile political visits and growing into the institution it is today.

Key Contributions

  • Redesigned the student newspaper twice—first to modernize the brand from The UTimes to The University Times, and later to transition it from a traditional broadsheet to a tabloid format. This overhaul included new features and special sections to keep content fresh while adapting to shifts in the advertising landscape.

  • Pioneered a shift toward video and social media-focused content before it became the norm. We experimented with new ways to produce news and entertainment for a digital-first audience.

  • Created numerous designs and logos for the university, including one of my favorite projects—a series of vintage-style postcards.

  • Advised the literary arts magazine, an exciting challenge each year. The students produced incredible work, and the publication earned several awards.

  • Drove ad revenue growth by developing special sections and launching new mini-publications that featured full-color ads, ensuring design remained a focal point.

  • Advised Radio Free Charlotte, the university’s digital radio station, and oversaw production of Niner News, a weekly digital video program.

  • Designed the club hockey jersey—because even in the rink, branding matters.

This experience allowed me to push creative boundaries, adapt to a changing media landscape, and mentor studentswho were eager to learn. It was a dynamic and rewarding chapter in my career.
